There are several reasons why you could have sewer smells in your home or business. We’re not talking about the lingering odor that Uncle Billy left in the bathroom, but something even more sinister than whatever he ate for lunch. It’s that sewer scent you notice when the house has been closed up for a few days, or when you haven’t opened the windows in a while. It’s not usually overpowering, but most definitely a problem. All About Plumbing, which serves the greater Asheville and Hendersonville area, has the expertise to fix those malodorous aromas in your home or business.
Inadequate or Lack of Traps or Vents. Every fixture (sink, toilets, etc.) should have a
a trap or vent pipe to keep smells from entering the home. Some older or improperly designed systems are missing the required traps. Sometimes older homes have an old “house trap,” usually in the basement or crawlspace. That old trap could be cracked or broken, which is how the stink seeps into your basement. We can fix that for you.
Broken Toilet Seals. This is quite common. Broken toilet seals dry out, allowing the odors to enter your home. There could be an air leak in the wax ring, vent pipe, or rotted wood around the toilet causing the foul stench. Grab the bowl of the toilet and see if you can slide it side to side, using only a few pounds of pressure; there’s no need to use Schwartzenegger strength on it. If it rocks, your wax ring needs replaced.
Dry Traps. Often there is a sink in the basement or spare bathroom that you simply never use. All the water in the U-shaped trap has evaporated, which allows gasses from the sewer system to come back up through the sink. Run a quart or so of water down the drain to fill the trap and block those stinky gasses.
These are only a few of the most common causes of sewer odors in homes. Most people would rather have a professional assess the problem and fix it instead of donning elbow-length rubber gloves to tackle the situation themselves. Enter All About Plumbing in Asheville and Hendersonville, NC. We have seen it all before and know how to locate the problem right away, and fix it right the first time.
